Marilyn Winkleby, PhD, MPH

MARILYN WINKLEBY, MPH, Ph.D., is an emerita Professor of Medicine who has made significant contributions to the field of population health science. After earning her doctorate from UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health, she led a research group at SPRC, integrating epidemiologic studies with intervention research to explore social determinants of health. Her work has been supported by substantial NIH and CDC funding and has resulted in over 150 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine.

 

Dr. Winkleby is known for her community collaborations, notably a 15-year partnership with the Monterey County Health Department and a 20-year collaboration with Lund University in Sweden. Her commitment to public service is exemplified by her co-founding of the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program in 1988, which has empowered over 750 high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in science and health. The program received the U.S. Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring in 2011.

 

Residing in Bend, Oregon, Dr. Winkleby remains actively engaged with post-doctoral students and faculty at SPRC and serves as the CEO and President of Access to Achievement Education Foundation, her 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to educational advancement.
